Hasty Pudding 2018

The Red Balloon brings you behind the scenes in the press room for this year's Hasty Pudding: Man of the Year. This year's honoree, Paul Rudd, graciously accepted the honor in the Hasty Pudding playhouse otherwise known as Farkas Hall. Before Paul entered the press room, a reporter from People Magazine called a restaurant asking what Paul ate for lunch. When Paul entered and he was asked the question of who he would be rooting for during the Patriot's game you can only imagine the grimaces and shock and horror when he announced that he would not be cheering on the Patriots!

Needless to say, Paul made quite an impression in Boston!

Feast your eyes on some photos:

Hasty Pudding's Man & Woman of the Year

Woman of the Year: Octavia Spencer

The Hasty Pudding Institute honored Octavia Spencer as the 2017 Woman of the Year. The distinction of Woman of the Year began in 1951 and has been bestowed upon such notable actresses as Meryl Streep, Bette Midler, Shirley MacLaine, Cher, Lucille Ball, Sally Field, Debbie Reyolds, and Dame Helen Mirren.

Octavia Spencer is one of the stars of the film Hidden Figures and has received a SAG, Golden Globe, NCAAP Image, and Oscar nominations for her role. Octavia has acted in a number of films including Zootopia, The Help, Get on Up, and most recently Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. Octavia Spencer was all smiles upon receiving her very own Pudding Pot.

Man of the Year: Ryan Reynolds

The Hasty Pudding Theatrical's recently named Ryan Reynolds as the 2017 Hasty Pudding Man of the Year. Reynolds has starred in countless films including Deadpool, Woman in Gold, Definitely Maybe, The Croods, Safe House, The Proposal, Turbo, Paperman, and The Change Up.

As part of the Hasty Pudding roast, Ryan Reynolds had to endure tormenting a number of notables including a Meryl Streep impersonator. He appeared not at all at ease with the daunting task. However, he had to complete this task in order to earn his Pudding Pot. At last, Reynolds told Meryl that she was "overrated." Sounds of laughter could be heard throughout the evening from the sold-out crowd in the Hasty Pudding's Farkas Hall.

Exclusive Review: The Revenant

While here it is:
The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.
The film is based on the true story of Leonardo DiCaprio's character who has a very BAD DAY.
His day goes like this: first he witnesses the death of his son (while being unable to do anything about it) and subsequently he is buried while still Alive. Both of those happen at the hands of: Tom Hardy. Leonardo DiCaprio becomes WAIT FOR IT:

THE REVENANT
Yes, that is an actual word. Though, The Red Balloon initially thought it was made up for the film, the word means: "one that returns after death." Yes, that's right Victor Frankenstein may have learned something from the Revenant (as in, Victor Frankenstein may not have needed that Lazarus fork after all.)

Keep in mind that prior to being buried alive, DiCaprio witnessed his son being burned while alive and his wife and/or love of his life killed in front of him. As if the earlier stuff on said BAD DAY wasn't bad enough.

Both actors, DiCaprio and Hardy, are superb in their portrayal of their real-life counterparts. The film itself is extremely long. As in 2 hours and 36 minutes long. The Red Balloon can't deny that the 2 hours and 31 minutes of graphic scenes are worth watching for the final five minutes of the film. The Revenant has possibly the most epic ending of any movie made all year.

Ending aside, there is a memorable scene involving Leonardo DiCaprio and a stolen horse. And let's not even delve into the scene which can only be dubbed, "DiCaprio versus Bear."

But then again, The Red Balloon, as always does not want to provide any spoilers. Leonardo DiCaprio does partake in what can only be termed the original "farm to table" experience for most of the film. As in, he grabs a fish out of the water and well - eats it - head first. And this continues with many, many more wildlife. The film is dark and at times, it seems to be at such extremes that you almost want them to flash on the screen the words, "This is entirely as it occurred in real-life." But, there have been a few embellishments to the film to say the very least. You can see it for yourself later this month.

The Revenant opens Christmas Day in limited release and January 8th nationwide.

The Round-Up

A look at some films:

The Good Dinosaur: It's rare to see a film that anyone can enjoy. Of course, there was Hotel Transylvania 2 which if you haven't yet seen you should catch (even if you didn't watch the first one.) The Good Dinosaur is a beautiful story with a heartwarming message.

Spotlight: There is no denying that this is one well written film. The acting is exceptional as well and it is worthy to watch just to see Mark Ruffalo's performance alone.

Brooklyn: This is an love story at the crux and the main character falls in love with a boy from Brooklyn. The boy happens to have a little brother who basically steals every scene he is in with his witty antics.

The Martian: It felt like this film hadn't been edited. Beyond that, there is never a genuine sentiment on the part of the Martian himself that makes the audience believe that he thinks he won't be found. That lack of emotion really comes across the screen. This film is no Gravity, which is superb. If you haven't seen Gravity, be sure to catch that film.

Spectre: This was a Spectre. It failed to achieve the same level as Skyfall and seemed to disappoint rather than bring itself to the level of more recent Bond films.

Stay tuned to The Red Balloon which will feature a full review of The Revenant opening Christmas Day, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy (who stars in the film Locke, a truly amazing film.) The Red Balloon will be reviewing the film next week after attending the press screening.

Year in Reflection: 2014

I've been writing this Year in Reflection in my head for quite a while now. And now we arrive at the time to finally actually type it all out. I have to admit that it was easier whilst it was "in my mind."

But alas, I do have the Golden Rules, which I started during last year's Year in Review and would like to now continue the same time honored tradition. [To review the first two Golden Rules you can always go here: http://theredballoonreport.blogspot.com/2014/01/year-in-review.html]

The following are the lessons that we all learned this year along the harsh road called "life."
Here they are ~
Golden Rule #3: Do Not Enter an Elevator with Solange.
I think that Golden Rule #3 doesn't really need any explication.
I saw Solange in concert back in 2013 and I had the foresight even then to take the escalator. What can I say, I've always been ahead of my times.

Golden Rule #4: Always be prepared.
For this one The Red Balloon need sto update an old biblical message. In the biblical message the saying is that if the man had known the hour at which the burglar was coming, he would not have left his home to be broken into. So that of course is still relevant today. However, the updated message reads: if you know the hour at which you are going to meet said celebrity you put on something nice, maybe get your hair done and Voila! But no, the hour at which you will meet said celebrity just had to be a big surprise : )

Now, this year The Red Balloon is thankful for:
1) Family and Friends. This is so clearly numero uno.

2) Anniversaries: For whatever reason The Red Balloon has been getting a ton more anniversary cards in the mail then ever before. Just the other day, a card from Macy's arrived that read, "Happy Anniversary!" It was particularly surprisingly to know they've been keeping track of the day The Red Balloon started spending oodles of money there. In any event, it's always nice to be recognized.

3) The fact that The Red Balloon's camera died two seconds after meeting Jake Gyllenhaal. True story.
Seriously how else would The Red Balloon have been able to capture this gem:

Words of wisdom gained that day: You can't yell, "Jake Gyllenhaal" in a crowded theater...perhaps another update of an old phrase.

What The Red Balloon is looking forward to in 2015:
1) New Year's Eve and the morning of January 1st celebration on a boat. The Red Balloon can't actually recall the last time seeing midnight fireworks live and being able to see them on a boat is well...just an incredible way to kick off 2015.

2) The Second Interview. of all the films that opened this month, the one that The Red Balloon didn't see was: The Interview. But, let's face it, what does Hollywood do best: make sequels. You can bet they'll be a "Second Interview." And, as with all second interviews, everyone will ask the same question, "How did they [Seth Rogen and James Franco] get a SECOND interview????"
Answer: Absolutely no idea. We're still questioning how they got a FIRST!
And, more importantly, they'll play both films together in one bundle so for everyone who didn't get to see the first film [cue: all of North Korea] we'll be able to easily catch up!

3) More quality time writing; really looking forward to 2015 being the year for that.

4) More fun. This one needs no explanation folks.

Here 's to an amazing 2015! Feel free to leave a comment on The Red Balloon with what you are looking forward to in the new year.

Stay tuned for more adventures in the new year...til then The Red Balloon wishes you a year full of wonderful memories, good health, and more happiness than can be contained in 365.245 days!

Jake Gyllenhaal: Nightcrawler Exclusive

It started like any other Saturday but it ended well...like no other ordinary Saturday at all. Allow me to explain~

There I was sitting in a packed theater. In fact, practically every seat was filled and it was about 5 minutes until showtime. The film: the advance screening of Nightcrawler.

We had been expecting director Dan Gilroy to be at the screening since this particular advance screening included a question and answer portion. Of course, those screenings are always packed.

But, we were informed about 4.2 minutes before showtime that director Dan Gilroy was "very sorry" but he would be unable to make it to the screening. Cue: Door opening and Nightcrawler star/insane hottie/sweetest boy next store ever Jake Gyllenhaal walks through said door opening. Now: that ordinary Saturday is finally shaping up! (Additional edit: Jake I want to add inspirational actor as well to the list of above adjectives to describe you. I didn't get the opportunity to add that originally but I do want you to know that I respect your work!)

What can I say: Jake was everything I expected him to be and yet so much more. Talk about a "surprising Saturday." Everyone in the entire audience was speechless and I mean speechless. You could have heard a pin drop on the theater floor as fans watched with jaws dropped and were utterly dumbfounded to see Jake Gyllenhaal standing right there before their very eyes. Needless to say, no one said a word about director Dan Gilroy being unable to attend. ie. if you asked anywhere about Director Dan they would have responded, "Dan Who?"

Yes, you've probably read the newspaper articles about Jake appearing at the advance screening of his film and surprising fans but I was actually there first hand. This is not some second hand account of what occurred. In some ways, I guess this is a bit like Jake Gyllenhaal's character in the film, who is the first person to come upon many news stories and maybe in some ways Jake wanted to do just that: allow his fans to be just like his character in the film.

I saw Jake and I actually got to talk with him and meet him. Yes that's right. Jake told everyone that he didn't want them taking photos of him from far away. No, no, no, that's just not his style. He invited everyone, yes EVERYONE to take  photos with him. So, yes now I have my selfie with Jake Gyllenhaal for all of posterity.

He thanked everyone afterwards for "Being bold" and going after what they wanted. He said that's exactly what the film, Nightcrawler is all about and that his character does just that. He also said that after we saw the film that we would think he was crazy. He told us to enjoy the film and that even if we didn't like the film, we should simple "lie." So, I have to say, I've met many famous people but probably none as sweet and kindhearted as Mr. Jake Gyllenhaal. Keep it locked on The Red Balloon for exclusive photos from the screening that you will see only here. Not the newspaper, no sir. You'll see them only on The Red Balloon.

Here's to you readers!

Have you been Whiplashed?

The Marketing team behind this film probably is responsible for one omission which falls in the "Epic Marketing Fails" of the last 6 months category. Allow me to explain.

I just saw the film Whiplash. It is an interesting picture to say the very least. The film hits all of the "high notes" in a matter of many, many ways. I must also add that the music throughout the film is also phenomenal. J.K. Simmons plays a music teacher who is over the top in his teaching methods (I won't give the whole film away, you'll just have to see the picture for yourself.)

Okay so back to my main point as pertains to the: "Epic Marketing Fail." No, seriously, I did have a point here. Everyone who saw the film during opening weekend should have walked out of the theater to find a parting gift which was: a "I just got WHIPLASHED" T-shirt. Seriously, that would have been a great T-shirt and if that wouldn't have promoted a great film to even greater proportions and grander "scales" well I don't know what would have.

So if you're reading this and you have yet to be "WHIPLASHED" well then what are you waiting for? An invitation?
A T-shirt?
Well, perhaps this blog will take the place of both of those.
Onward and Upward folks!

Don't take this "Trip to Italy"

A new film called "The Trip to Italy" features beautiful scenes: rolling hillsides and vast expanses of luxurious lands all over Italia. The film appeared at first glance to have much promise. That was of course until I actually watched the film. What the film does have in the beauty of the landscape, it still fails to make up for in terms of plot, dialogue, script, and basically ever other matter essential to good filmmaking.

The movie stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon who overdo most every scene they're in and well...they're in pretty much every scene of the film. The film starts out okay and then gets really bad really quickly. The pair manage to talk so much that the viewer is literally in pain. I mean...it appears that the two mean well..but the jokes do not come across to the viewer as jokes instead it's almost as if the two are really trying too hard and end up being so over the top that the viewer can feel no connection with the characters. And there you have it: right at the heart of the film, the two actors have alienated the viewer. The duo are on the trip alone.

I'm writing about this film for the sole purpose of trying to save others from taking this trip. Trust me when I say: this is one 'Trip to Italy' you don't want to take!

Chef

Whatever you do, do not watch this film on an empty stomach! You will be sorry you ever did. Be prepared and make sure you have plenty of snacks on hand.

Also, be sure to stay until the very end because there are some recipes that play on screen after the film is over. Of course, now all I can think of is food. This one absolutely amazing three course meal I had the other day of a salad with seasonal berries, steak and fries, and a decadent chocolate cake for dessert. See how this film can completely leave you hungry? But don't take my word for it. Instead watch Jon Favreau as he is the mastermind on screen, as the Chef in the kitchen, and off-screen as well, as the film is written, directed, and produced by him. I couldn't help but think of Swingers and how genius he was even then. He has always been the supporting actor, the sidekick. I was so glad to see that he was finally the lead. An actor like that who is so talented deserves a role worthy of him. Chef is all that and more. Of course, it took him to write the script so that goes to show sometimes you just have to go out there on your own. And he does, both behind the camera and right smack dab on screen.

A surprise appearance in the film by Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely remarkable. His part will leave a lastly "mark" in your mind as his character is completely anal right down to the fact that everyone who enters his office building needs to wear "booties" so they don't leave a mark on his floors. Picture in your mind the booties that doctors wear. Now that is comedy at its absolute best.

Jon Favreau is the guy who at the start of the film is working in a restaurant and has to deal with the pressure from the restaurant owner (Dustin Hoffman) to always stick to the usual menu. Jon feels like he is unable to be creative and to create foods with adventure, pizzazz, and style.

A food critic in the film is again played by someone famous. Originally we only see a blurred out picture of him in a magazine. At that moment, I immediately knew who it was. Of course, when he arrives at the restaurant, more hilarious moments ensue.

Jon as the lead in Chef plays a guy who doesn't want to be pegged into just making the same old menu items. He goes out on his own on a food truck joined by his son and John Leguizamo at his funniest and best. The trio travel from stop to stop and the film becomes poignant as we see moments between father and son that really cut to the core of the film. Throughout the journey, you will find yourself laughing and crying and well...don't forget what I said about bringing those snacks!

When The Game Stands Tall

I've watched quite a few films this summer. This one was different. This one was a football film that didn't feel at all like a football film. Let's face it: aren't those the best football films? I can't help but think back to Any Given Sunday. Good grief that's a football film at its worst. What can really be remembered from that film? When The Game Stands Tall is a film not to be forgotten.

When The Game Stands Tall tells the true story of a high school team that went undefeated for 151 games. A truly moving take on more than just a game. The film is really about the coach's ability to create a team that was really a family. A team that wasn't focused on winning but on playing the very best game that they could. The film is superb in its script and in the actor's ability to bring you right into the story. I have to say that When The Game Stands Tall is definitely one of the best films I've seen in some time.

Even after the movie is over, make sure to watch the old clips from the actual coach. Those film reels are the lasting legacy that remains and that made that team a remarkable group. The film is set to be released August 22nd.

Film Reviews

Been wanting to update the blog but there have been some serious technical problems with this website.

In any event, I have basically forgotten what it is that I had intended to post so I decided I'd post a few very short reviews.
How to Train Your Dragon 2: Worth seeing even if you (like myself) never saw the first one. As far as I can tell the film is basically the cartoon version of the Godfather meets Godzilla: make what you will with that quote.

And So It Goes: The song that opens the movie, Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," is amazing. Unfortunately, the film is not.

Maleficent: Wait...Angelina Jolie plays a woman scorned? Wait...hold on...let me get this straight....Aneglina JOLIE plays a woman SCORNED? Man, I wish I could've seen Jennifer Aniston's face upon hearing about that one.

Think Like a Man 2: Seriously this film is the Hangover but without the one funny joke that made the Hangover ALMOST bearable.

The Fault in Our Stars: The book was really well-write, as in REALLY REALLY WELL WRITTEN. The script for the film is not. They really should have taken a note from an absolute masterpiece: The Perks of Being a Wallflower which had the script written by the author of the book.

Chef: This movie is a must-see. I can't say enough about it and yet at the present moment I'm speechless. I hope to write an additional blog about this film. It deserves to have more written about it.

X-Men Days of Future Past: The people behind X-Men really need to go back to the first and best X-Men. The rest of the films in the series have just been put together to get the masses to the theater.

Blended: They say if you have not nothing nice to say then you should say nothing.

Edge of Tomorrow: I wish I could, like Tom Cruise's character, go back in time to yesterday and NOT SEE THE FILM!

A Million Ways to Die in the West: Seth MacFarlane is a seriously talented individual.

Update: Earth to Echo: This movie although it is sorta claiming to be the latest version of E.T. is nowhere near in the same league as E.T. In fact, it was seriously painful to watch.

Jersey Boys: This film needed to be edited. It was disappointing considering Clint Eastwood was at the helm. The musical was amazing with just the right amount of everything, the movie, not so much.

22 Jump Street: Truth be told, I didn't really think the first film was great or even good for that matter. This second film however, manages to put some funny frames together from the first film and make it look entertaining. They do this in a clever way at the beginning of the film by saying: "previously, on 21 Jump Street." I honestly can't wait for 23 Jump Street. I really believe that by then the filmmakers will have finally been successful at making a good film. At least, the potential is there and this second film is proof enough of progress.

Tammy: This film is nothing like The Heat. Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing funny about this film.

America: A worth-while documentary but not quite sure that the audience for this one is going to go to the box office to watch it. In the first hour I thought, "this feels like a Michael Moore documentary" then Michael Moore suddently appeared.

What If: Basically in a nut shell, this film is this years: 500 Days of Summer. I'm not going to say anything more than that.

Sex Tape: Go see the film below. This one is basically summed up in the preview.

Begin Again: This film is worth seeing. The music is really moving and Mark Ruffalo is in the film. Need I say more?

For some bizarre reason I have a feeling that I'm forgetting a film or two but welll...

Okay, that's all for now folks, until next time ~

Movie Reviews

I'm going to try to make this as concise as possible so that you know which movies rock and which ones basically should never have been put out there into cinematic history.

Muppets Most Wanted: A toe-tapping good time (even if you didn't see the first one!) You can trust me on that since I didn't see the first one. The film is full of surprises including celebrities that just keep popping up from out of no where.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman: All of the jokes are on a higher-level. This film is one that anyone of any age can enjoy (FINALLY!)

Rio 2: This movie is good if you don't like to think or are under the age of 10 (if you fall into either category you'll appreciate this film.) If not, you should consider going to see either of the other two films above.

Captain America 2: At one point in the film my eyes inadvertently closed. When they re-opened, Captain America was still fighting off the same group of 40+ armed men and he had no weapons. Let me repeat: he had NO WEAPONS. This film is basically one of the worst films of the year. If you don't believe me ask anyone who is walking out of the film what the basic premise is about. Trust me when I tell you that they will be unable to tell you the premise because....well...the premise is so sloppily thrown together that at certain points in the movie I'll not even sure if the actors could remember the premise...or their lines for that matter.

The Grand Budapest Hotel: There is one part in the film where the narrator talks about how the main character was basically living during a time period that couldn't understand him. I almost laughed out loud because the same can be said about the film's director, Wes Anderson.

Draft Day: This movie does not belong in theaters. I truly have no idea what it's doing there. Perhaps it has something to do with Kevin Costner.

The Other Woman: At least the soundtrack is going to be enjoyable!

Heaven is for Real: I preferred the book but I have to admit that the preview for this film gave me goosebumps and was the reason that I decided that I had to read the book.

Noah: A truly, great film (FINALLY!)

Pompeii

Pompeii...Pompeii...Pompeii...where to begin?
Some things are just not very good and yet you find yourself watching them anyway. The same could be said for the film Pompeii.

I am officially going to begin using the phrase, "That film was a real Pompeii" to describe films that are basically...well...I think the phrase speaks for itself. The film actually made me of a museum exhibit of the ruins of Pompeii, which was very different from the film. The exhibit had a great deal of depth and character and was...well...interesting to look at.

There were several different aspects of Pompeii included in the museum exhibit including artifacts, such as plates, tools, jewelry, and coins that were used to purchase items in the marketplace. There were so many artifacts that it was easy to recreate in your mind what life back in Pompeii must have been like. I almost wish the film had started with the artifacts and gone back to the days of Pompeii. Perhaps that would have added another element to the film, a bit of depth that just wasn't present in the movie. Maybe archiologists could have been digging up and exploring ruins and had found a few artifacts and then there could have been a flashback where we see the artifacts as they were used at that time by a family in Pompeii. But, alas, the film really fell far short of expectation. The script was really rather tedious and boring at its best and most brillant moments.

Back at the museum, there were many, many artifacts. By far the most fascinating of all the remnants were the actual people themselves, some of whom were hugging and found to be embracing one another. Below, I've included one photo that I captured of a dog. He had been found in the ruins, chained to a fence. Of course the image of him is one not easily forgotten, unlike the film.

About Time

If you see only one film this weekend, you should consider this one. It's a movie with a little of everything. It's just a witty and wonderful film that will sweep you right off your feet. This fall, prepare to be swept away!

The Hangover Part III: at least the soundtrack was good

Safe Haven

This film is worth seeing. I originally was not really sure about the quality of this movie but it turned out that the acting, script, and even the music were all really good. The movie's actually pretty intense - I was not expecting any of it - which made for quite a delightful surprise, which is always nice! Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny, but from what I hear rain is on the way...guess we'll just wait and see : )

Last sunday

Not this past Sunday, but in actuality, the Sunday before this past one, I did not leave my humble surroundings. This marks the first time within conscious recollection that I didn't go out. That's just how ill I was.

In unrelated news, tonight I watched the soon to be released film Side Effects and it may win the award for worst film I've seen this year so far. The title had previously been held by Stand Up Guys....but it didn't take long for a worst worst film to come along....
And here I thought they didn't make movies that were that level of badness but they do...they really do...
Later

Keep calm and blog on!

I really don't have much to blog but wanted to use that title seen above!
Yesterday I overheard this:
Woman pointing to sign outside a theater: "look, Mama" (the horror film)
Response from man next to her: "no way, Dada!"
Back to the blog:
Didn't get to run today but hopefully will be back to training tomorrow even though I still don't even know if I am in the race or not....
